The Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning is leading the delivery of the North Queensland Stadium Project, which is expected to support up to 750 jobs throughout the design and construction stages.

With a total project budget of $250 million, the centrally located 25,000 seat, best-practice, multi-purpose, regional stadium will be built in Townsville, in time for the start of the 2020 National Rugby League (NRL) season.

The project provides a catalyst for urban regeneration in Townville, attracting further investment into the region and supporting jobs growth.

Project vision

Develop a vibrant new stadium that attracts visitors and investment, celebrates Townsville's tropical climate, values the water edge environment, delivers high quality public spaces and supports urban regeneration.

Project objectives

The project objectives are:

  • deliver a new best-practice, multi-purpose, regional stadium in Townsville by the commencement of the 2020 National Rugby League season
  • maximise employment and supply opportunities for the people of Townsville and the North Queensland region.

Project benefits

The North Queensland Stadium project is anticipated to be a catalyst directly and indirectly stimulating change that will benefit Townsville and the North Queensland region.

These changes include:

  • Expanding North Queensland infrastructure
    • provision of a nationally-recognised sports stadium with world-class sustainable urban design and architecture, and a uniquely 'North Queensland' identity
  • Supporting jobs and flow-on economic benefits
    • support of regional employment and supply chain investment during design and construction, and later during operation of the Stadium
    • attraction of broader investment and economic development in the long-term future of Townsville as a major regional city supporting further jobs growth
  • Fostering urban regeneration and enhanced liveability
    • transformation and activation of places and spaces as an urban attraction that draw people to Townsville's city heart
    • promotion of active experiences and social interaction including a broad range of sporting and cultural activities
  • Raising the profile of North Queensland region
    • attraction of investment in the region underpinned by sporting excellence, events capability, distinct tourism offerings for domestic and international visitors, and strong and diverse local economies.


North Queensland Stadium is a joint project of the Queensland Government, Australian Government and Townsville City Council and is supported by both the National Rugby League and the North Queensland Cowboys. The stadium forms part of the Townsville City Deal signed in December 2016.

Project delivery team

The delivery of the North Queensland Stadium project is being led by the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning with an experienced team of contractors and consultants including:

  • Audit Programmer: RCP.


The North Queensland Stadium site will be located within the Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area adjacent to the Townsville Central Business District, between Ross Creek and Saunders Street.
