The unique role of the Coordinator-General
As an independent officer of the state reporting directly to the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, the Coordinator-General plays a critical role in driving economic opportunities for Queensland.
Leveraging significant, wide-ranging regulatory powers, the Coordinator-General plans, delivers and coordinates large-scale projects, while ensuring their environmental and social impacts are properly managed.
The Office of the Coordinator-General operates under 2 pieces of legislation:
- State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 (SDPWO Act)
- Strong and Sustainable Resources Communities Act 2017.
The main mechanisms used include:
- coordinated project declarations requiring environmental assessment
- establishing State development areas
- using prescribed project powers to ensure timely decision making by local or state agencies
- issuing work regulations to undertake or direct programs of work
- undertaking land acquisitions.
What we offer

- coordination and facilitation of major infrastructure and development projects across Queensland utilising the extensive powers of the of the SDPWO Act
- facilitating assessments and approvals, including social and environmental impact statements
