About the project

The North to East Australia Pipeline proposal involves the construction and operation of a 1,561 kilometre (km) gas transmission pipeline and ancillary infrastructure to transport natural gas from the Northern Territory’s Beetaloo Sub-basin to Queensland’s gas network; supporting domestic gas supply, energy reliability and interstate energy connectivity.

Stage 2 of the North to East Australia Pipeline (the project) is subject of the coordinated project declaration. It comprises 899 km of the gas transmission pipeline between the Northern Territory/Queensland border to the South West Queensland Pipeline, which is situated approximately 90 kilometres east of Ballera.

Key features of the project include a buried steel gas pipeline up to 48 inches in diameter, two compressor stations, six temporary accommodation camps, laydown areas, temporary and permanent access tracks, water bores and water storages for construction and hydrotesting, and borrow pits.

The project is expected to require a capital investment of $2.75 - 3 billion and support a peak construction workforce of approximately 800 workers, with up to 15 new permanent operational roles across Brisbane and regional areas. It may also increase demand for Queensland-based suppliers, contractors and service providers, and support local and First Nations training and employment pathways.
